Hughesville couple celebrates golden anniversary

Mr. and Mrs. Walter Reed, of Hughesville, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on the first day of summer, June 21. They were married in the “Summer of ’69” by Rev. Clay Reed, uncle of Walter Reed, at Mt. Zion Lutheran Church in Hughesville.

The former Vicki Shaner is retired from the East Lycoming School District.

Walter is retired from the Lycoming County Technology Center and remains actively engaged in the local community as the current president of the Hughesville Borough Council, after having served two terms as mayor of Hughesville.

Both are Hughesville natives and graduates of Hughesville High School. They met at the high school during a Shaners vs. Reeds softball game. When it started to rain, Mrs. Reed jumped into Mr. Reed’s new red Cougar.

The couple were active volunteers with the local Little League organization. Reed Field at the East Lycoming Little League complex named in honor of Walter Reed and his brother for volunteering their time and equipment to build several of the fields in the early days of the complex. Walter also served as president of East Lycoming Little League and Vicki served as president of the East Lycoming Little League Auxiliary.

Walter also recently has been selected to serve as the team host for the Little League World Series team from Japan this summer. Both were members of the Hughesville Volunteer Fire Department, with Walter still serving as a life member of the department.

They are the parents of a daughter, Kathy Pentz, of Montgomery, and two sons, Tony, of Mullica Hill, New Jersey, and Eric, of Hughesville. They have 11 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
