DAR announces Good Citizen award

The Lycoming Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution will announce the 2012-13 Good Citizen at their March 12 meeting at the Woman’s Club, 414 Walnut St.

A member of the senior class from each of the eight participating county high schools was selected by their peers based on their dependability, service, leadership and patriotism.

The student then had the option to participate in the DAR Good Citizen scholarship contest. The contest consists of two parts. The first is their involvement in the community, activities at school, extracurricular activities, future plans, education and career goals, plus describe how the four qualities of a DAR Good Citizen are important to them and how they have tried to exhibit those qualities in their lives and relationships with others. The second is to write an essay. The students also must submit two reference letters and provide their grade transcripts.

Three non-DAR judges grate all the information and essays for a possible score of 100.

This year’s candidates are Stacy Lynn Loveland, Williamsport Area High school; Marco Antonio Estrella, South Williamsport Area High School; henry Abraham Rainey, St. John Neumann Regional Academy; Sarah Elaine Miller, Loyalsock Township High School; Jessica Lauren Shelter, Hughesville High School; Karen Marie Schulte, Montoursville Area High School; and Dominic Arthur Galanti, Montgomery Area High School.

Cris Gansell-Whitcomb, Good Citizen chairperson, will introduce the student and their parents, who will be guests at the chapter luncheon. The student will receive a certificate, pin and wallet card. The $100 award will be presented at that time by Whitecomb and Marilee Sholtis, chapter regent.

The winning essay has been sent on for evaluation at the state level. The winner at that level will receive a $250 award. If successful, it will move onto the national level, where the winner will receive a $5,000 scholarship.

The other seven Good Citizens will receive certificates, pins, wallet cards and $25 from the chapter.
