Music Club announces scholarship winner
The Williamsport Music Club recently announced that Sarah Long is the 2013 winner of the $1,500 Budd Memorial Scholarship.
The scholarship is offered annually to a qualified Lycoming County high school senior who is planning to pursue higher education in music.
Long is the daughter of Laurie and Joel Long, Williamsport. She is home schooled and is the private violin student of David Lassiter. She also is the private piano student of Jane Landon. She learned of the scholarship from her teachers and has been accepted to Bob Jones University, Greenville, S.C., to study orchestral instrument performance.
Long has been a member of the Williamsport Symphony Youth Orchestra for five years and is playing with the Williamsport Symphony Orchestra this season (2012-13).
Long entered several Pennsylvania Music Educators Association district, regional and state orchestra festivals. She entered PMEA district in the fall of 2008 placing sixth in the first violin section and in the fall of 2009 she placed second.
She entered the PMEA Regional Orchestra in the winter of 2009, placing 15th and the PMEA State Orchestra placing 25th in the first violin section. In the fall of 2012, she entered PMEA District Orchestra and placed second in the first violin section. In the winter of 2013, she entered the PMEA Regional Orchestra and placed fifth in the first violin section.
Long plays solos for church services and accompanies her church children’s choir on the piano.
Long was featured playing her winning violin solo, “Concerto No.1 – Prelude” by Max Bruch at the Williamsport Music Club’s GALA?Concert April 23 at Robert M. Sides Family Music Center.
The Williamsport Music Club is an affiliate of the Pennsylvania and National Federation of Music Clubs.
Students applying for the scholarship must submit a performance tape or CD in advance of auditions. They also must perform memorized material from standard repertoire. The scholarship committee chairmen are Marilyn Burget and Doris Teufel.
