New ‘A Brush with Kindness’ program from Habitat

Greater Lycoming Habitat for Humanity is offering an opportunity for homeowners to participate in a new housing preservation initiative called A Brush with Kindness.

A Brush with Kindness is a nation-wide effort to serve low-income homeowners who struggle to maintain the exterior of their homes.

It will focus on exterior home repair services such as minor exterior repairs, landscaping, and exterior clean-up. Groups of 10 to 20 volunteers will work alongside the homeowner to revitalize a home’s exterior.

A Brush with Kindness is a partner to Habitat’s existing core building program. It allows Habitat to serve a different population than is currently served, yet follows the same basic tenets for eligibility (need, ability to pay, willingness to partner). It is a direct fit with HFHI’s strategic plan to exponentially increase the number of families served.

A Brush with Kindness uses volunteers, donated materials and no interest loans to makes repairs affordable, helping low-income homeowners continue to live independently and securely in their homes. The new program is part of Habitat’s broader community development strategy called the Neighborhood Revitalization Initiative.

The Neighborhood Revitalization Initiative is designed to intentionally pursue Habitat’s strategic imperative of helping to transform and strengthen communities.

It is a holistic approach that revitalizes the appearance of the neighborhood, encourages connections within the community, and most importantly, helps preserve affordable housing stock.

The goal is to increase the number of families living in safe, decent, affordable housing.

This program will also increase the number of volunteer opportunities for current volunteers and expands the base of volunteers by providing a different type of opportunity.

“The hope is to also keep current sponsors engaged with additional opportunities for smaller projects, as well as increase the number of new sponsors by offering a different type of sponsorship opportunity,” said Ana White, home development coordinator for Greater Lycoming Habitat for Humanity.

“A Brush with Kindness creates opportunities to develop cooperative relationships within the community with neighborhood churches, community organizations, city/county governments, local businesses, schools, etc.”
