Community Foundation supports Habitat for Humanity

Greater Lycoming Habitat for Humanity recently received a $5,000 mini-grant from the Williamsport Lycoming Community Fund at the First Community Foundation Partnership of Pennsylvania (FCFP). The grant will be used toward a new program that the non-profit is offering for homeowners to participate in – a new housing preservation initiative called A Brush with Kindness.

The Leadership Lycoming class of 2013 worked closely with Greater Lycoming Habitat for Humanity in a community project and the FCFP Grant Panel recommended the service organization for the award.

“We are so grateful to receive this generous grant,” said Ana White, home development coordinator at Habitat. “Habitat for Humanity International has long recognized the need to serve families by means other than new home construction. Realizing the vision of a world where everyone has a decent place to live requires that Habitat also help families in need to repair and maintain existing homes.

“We agree that to accomplish Habitat’s vision to create a community in which everyone has a decent place to live, we must consider preserving affordable housing for existing homeowners. A Brush with Kindness can do just that by serving families that do not need new home construction,” she added.

“As we are in the early stages of developing the ABWK program, initially our focus will be on landscaping, yard work and exterior cleanup. We recognize that the positive impact of ABWK can reach beyond the individual homeowner being helped,” said Tina McDowell, executive director.

“As communities get more involved, Habitat is committed to serving more families by expanding its repair services. The goal of serving more families will lead to healthier neighborhoods.”
