Charity events raise funds for non-profit
ACES North America is a locally founded non-profit which provides education, community development and medical outreach throughout the island nation of the Dominican Republic.
On Aug. 5, ACES North America partnered with the Williamsport Crosscutters to provide an evening of dining and entertainment, Dominican style.
The menu was scrumptious under the leadership of ACES volunteer chef, Jonathan Williamson. The Genetti Hotel provided kitchen staff and donated the ballroom for the event.
Col. Sam Astin of the Rescue Workers was auctioneer for a lively bidding contest as donated items were offered for purchase.
Mike Caschera taught the merengue, a classic Dominican dance, to those who were brave enough to attempt the challenging sequence. The Latin American ballplayers with the Crosscutters acted as servers and mingled with the guests throughout the evening. More than $2,000 was raised from this first-time venture, and plans are underway for next year’s event.
An indoor yard sale was held over Labor Day weekend in a large warehouse room of the Pajama Factory.
Sales were steady and more than $2,500 was earned through the project.
The event will be repeated several Saturdays during the fall.
New donations of usable goods are appreciated, especially items such as furniture or appliances.
Items can be dropped off at RE Smith Co., 608 Cemetery St. during regular business hours.
To arrange for pick-up call 326-2961.
