Providing work experience for youth in the Northern Tier

Area youth across the Northern Tier were able to earn a paycheck this summer while gaining valuable work experience. Thirty-four young people participated in the Summer Employment program in the five county region. The Summer Employment Program provides young people, ages 14 to 21, with the opportunity to build a strong foundation of employment competencies and the discipline of work, gain an appreciation of the connection between work and learning, and educate them on the demands of business.

In addition to working, the youth participated in classroom learning experiences and educational tours to prepare them for the realities of work and to introduce them to different occupational opportunities. The youth spent a lot of time in the classroom learning topics pertaining to their work experiences and future work endeavors. Resume writing, job interview skills, career exploration, job searching skills, team building, work maturity and problem solving were a few of the many topics covered. Tours included GTP, Bradford County Correctional Facility, NTSWA, Corning Museum of Glass, Wyoming County Courthouse offices and 911 Center, Hotel Harrington, Jolly Trolley, The Sullivan Review, Schneider’s Market, Reddon’s Drug Store and Susquehanna Free Library.

After academic enrichment participants began their work experience, scattered amongst various worksites throughout the five counties. Worksites included area school districts, Martha Lloyd Community Services, the Bradford County Prothonotary Office, Bradford County Manor, The Creamery, TREHAB, Schneider’s Market, Susquehanna Free Library, Mansfield Borough, Goodwill, Wyoming County Recycling Center, Endless Mts. Visitors Bureau and Ebb’s Candy Jar.

Administered by Bradford County Action in Bradford County and TREHAB in Sullivan, Susquehanna, Tioga and Wyoming Counties, the program is funded with Workforce Investment Act and DPW funding.
