Library granted wish list items by Friends

At the October board meeting of the Friends of the James V. Brown Library, the library was granted several items from a wish list requested by the Friends.

The grants amount to $15,000, which comes from a combination of membership dues, spring and fall book sale support and proceeds from Friends Favorites Gently Used Book Store, managed by the Friends.

The store is open five days a week and those interested may visit the library to get a bookmark listing the days and hours.

The $15,000 has been broken down as follows:

The store is providing $4,000 for the purchase of overdrive collections “advantage,” which will significantly expand the number of e-book titles available to clients; the main Friends treasury is providing $3,000 to renew and replace teacher resource materials on the Story Mobile (puppets, big books and other support materials), $4,500 will purchase a subscription to “Mango Languages” a conversational language learning system and $3,500 to purchase e-reader devices for staff to use in the library to help clients learn how to more efficiently use their own devices.

The scope of these new resources includes advantages to all ages of library users.

In another action it was announced that the volunteer recognition reception will be moved to April 3, 2014, to kick off National Volunteer Month.

Volunteers from the library and from the membership of Friends are recognized annually for their many hours of service to the library. Recently the event has been held in late October or early November.

The move to April and Volunteer Month seems a natural fit.

The last business the board discussed was to set the date and time for the annual full membership meeting.

It will be held at 5:15 p.m. Dec. 3.

At this meeting committee chairs give short annual reports and new board members and officers are elected. Refreshments are traditionally served so that the membership can become familiar with the members of the board.
