Packwood House Museum to feature holiday events

LEWISBURG – The Packwood House Museum’s 2013 Holiday Exhibit, “Christmas Memories,” opens Nov. 26 for the holiday season. The exhibit, spread throughout the first floor of the Museum and in the Tour Center’s Kelly Gallery, will feature an assortment of nostalgic Christmas decorations from the 1930s, ’40s and ’50s.

The display will include a variety of vintage lights, a Woolworth’s display, chenille wreaths, lead icicles, clear and silvered glass ornaments, celluloid ornaments, flocked trees, a Japan cardboard village, and much more. The exhibit is made possible through the generosity of local collector Chuck Chatham, who is lending part of his collection to create the exhibit. A room in the gallery also will host a salon-style art show featuring the work of local artists, with most of the work being for sale.

The exhibit will be open from Nov. 26 through Jan. 4, 2014, during the museum’s regular hours of Tuesday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Children 11 and under and museum members are free to enter the exhibit. A tour of the entire museum also will be available for a fee.

Also, as part of Lewisburg’s Christmas festivities on Dec. 7, the day of the Victorian Christmas Parade, Packwood House Museum will hold a Christmas Tag Sale from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Museum’s Tour Center at 15 N. Water St. The sale will include an array of seasonal decorations, tree ornaments, dishware, fabrics, knick-knacks, lights, wreaths and almost anything you might need to decorate your home for the holidays. The museum also will sell baked goods during the sale.

The Museum Gift Shop will have seasonal items available as well, including a large selection of hats from Woolrich, special hand-tatted ornaments, jewelry, quilt-themed tree ornaments available only at the museum, and a variety of beautiful consignment items that would make lovely holiday gifts. Gift memberships to the Museum will also be available for purchase. This is a great way to stock up on seasonal merchandise and support Packwood House Museum at the same time.
