The holiday season is upon us, and while the Black Friday and Cyber Monday shopping frenzies are over, there’s still a way to give a gift that benefits the community.

With the James V. Brown Library’s “Own A Day” program, you can give the opportunity to name a day of library service to honor or memorialize someone special, to publicize a business or to celebrate a birthday or anniversary.

“This is a popular program for so many reasons,” said Robin Glossner, library development director. “We all have enough stuff; why not help out a community treasure when you give a gift?”

She noted that people often renew the same date, year after year, as gifts for grandchildren or for wedding anniversaries. The program began in 2009 and has raised more than $50,000 to help the library continue to champion the love of reading and open new doors to lifelong learning for members of the community.

When you “Own a Day” at the Library, your loved one will be notified of the gift with a card. The gift will be recognized on the receipts at circulation desks, on the flat-screen televisions throughout the library, on the library’s home page, in the library’s email, printed newsletters and on the library’s social media pages.

To “Own a Day” at the James V. Brown Library, give a donation at or call the library at 570-326-0536.

There is no place like home for the holidays. Let the James V. Brown Library help to stay connected this season.

Share with visiting relatives and friends that guests to the area with valid photo identification may register to receive free use of the computers and Wi-fi access.

Visitors also may participate in library programs, receive help with e-readers, access local genealogy files and read periodicals.

Library patrons can make the holidays brighter in the community by donating to a local charity such as Toys for Tots.

The library is serving as a collection spot with containers in the main circulation area.

The library also has partnered with the local Red Cross chapter to provide holiday cards for military personnel.

There is a box of cards at the main circulation desk for patrons to send a holiday greeting to those in the military.

The library sells stamps for those mailing holiday greetings.

Additionally, for those travelling, patrons may apply for a passport.

Also, for those looking for a gift, patrons may sponsor their loved one their “own day” at the library.

When one sponsors an “Own A Day,” they will reach more than 1,000 people.

Choose a favorite day, sponsor yourself or a loved one’s birthday and help the library meet the growing needs of the community.

The new year will kick off an exciting year at the James V. Brown Library with many offerings, such as programming, resources and activities for all ages.
