Railroad club announces holiday open house schedule

CASTANEA – The Clinton Central Model Railroad Club announced their annual Holiday Open House schedule for the 2013-14 winter season at the station, 15 Logan Ave.

The club will open its doors from 6 to 9 p.m. Dec. 10 and 17, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Dec. 14 and 28. Open house dates include 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Jan. 11 and 25 and Feb. 15, 2014.

Guests of all ages will enjoy the sights and sounds of trains operating on over 1,600 feet of mainline track on a HO scale, DCC layout. Station tours including railroad memorabilia and model railroad displays will be provided.

The first and second peninsulas landscaping has been completed. The mountain at the east end of the layout has grown over the new helix, which serves a new second deck being built on the third peninsula. Several new industries have arrived and trackage to serve them has been laid.

Also, several new signal towers have sprung up along the twin-tracked mainline and are operating based on track occupancy and-or switch positioning.

This has been made possible by a rewiring of the layout’s track electrical system and the addition of Digitraxx hardware to monitor train movement on the layout’s mainline.

A special feature of this year’s open house is the opportunity for children to observe Thomas and Friends operating on the club’s track. Videos of Thomas will be playing on the club’s video screen.

The club is located in the former New York Central railroad station in Castanea and is currently celebrating its 33nd year as a model railroading organization.

The club has developed a collection of railroad artifacts including an extensive railroad library. Donations of railroad and model railroad items always are appreciated.
