Tony’s story

Dear Santa,

One of the highlights of the Christmas season is listening to all the new and not so new Christmas songs. Radio stations help to make this special season “merry and bright” with the playing of our favorite Christmas tunes.

Two of my all time favorite Christmas songs are “Merry Christmas, Darling” and “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas,” sung by Karen Carpenter. Although I was not a big fan of the Carpenters as a group, I had a deep appreciation for Karen Carpenter’s voice and the emotion she put into her songs. She had an amazing voice. I thought for sure with a talent like hers, all was right for her.

But that is not always the case.

Behind the voice and the smile, there were struggles in her life in which she was not able to overcome. There are many who are in similar situations. Behind their smiles and kind words, life’s burdens become almost too much to bear. This can be especially true during Christmas when all seems right in the world.

It is my hope that those lost in the struggles of everyday life can overcome their frustrations their disappointments realizing life is not always “merry and bright” and there is hope.

William Booth, founder of The Salvation Army, mission was to help those in need. Thieves, prostitutes, gamblers and drunkards were among Booth’s first converts to Christianity. To those desperately poor, he preached hope and salvation. It is my belief that The Salvation Army is still helping those in need with the message hope and salvation.

Safe travels, Santa – as you bring your special spirit to many throughout the world. It is my hope that the those in need receive a special blessing of their spirit and comfort on this special day.
