Red Cross concerned about fire safety
RENOVO – Tom Livingston, long-time volunteer and board member with the northcentral Pennsylvania chapter of the American Red Cross, accepted a check for $500 on March 1 at the Sons and Daughters of Italy. Kathy Tripp, a trustee for the Renovo club made the presentation. The club has raised $20,000 and donated it to Renovo non-profit organizations. Livingston said the money would be used for local disaster services. Officials at the Red Cross are concerned over the rise of numbers of house fires to which they have responded this winter.
“The numbers are high and people are really feeling it with the cold weather this year,” said Steve Leauber, disaster services manager for the region.
As a result of this concern Leauber is partnering with local fire departments to deliver smoke detectors and printed information to residents in rural areas.
“We’ll be up in Tioga County on March 11 to deliver information and detectors,” Leauber said.
The organization is urging people to test detectors, to make and practice a fire safety plan and to discuss where families will meet one another outside, upon escaping a burning home.
Red Cross volunteers try to respond to every house fire, to assist families with food, clothing and a place to stay. For more information about donating to the Red Cross or to assist as a volunteer, call 570-326-9131.
