Hoss’s launches White House petition to turn May 31 into an ode to beef’s best dish

HARRISBURG – There’s a National Shrimp Day, a National Hoagie Day and a National Orange Popsicle Day – and that’s just in the month of May.

So why, in the same month that calls itself National Beef Month, is there no National Steak Day?

That’s the question being asked by Hoss’s Steak & Sea House, and the goal of a WhiteHouse.gov petition filed by the restaurant to turn May 31 into a one-day tribute to sirloin, rib eye and filet mignon.

“The United States of America invented the hamburger, the corn dog, and buffalo wings. How is it possible that we don’t have a National Steak Day?” asked Billie Jo Walls, Hoss’s Steak & Sea House marketing director. “We’re going to change that with this petition, and we know there are millions of steak lovers out there who are more than happy to support our cause.”

The petition, which will be accessible on Hoss’s Facebook page throughout May, is part of the restaurant’s National Beef Month celebration known as Meaty Steakmas.

The month-long campaign, described by some as “Christmas for meat lovers,” will transform 35 of the steak chain’s Pennsylvania restaurants into odes to beef.

The festivities will include Steakmas trees decorated with meat-inspired ornaments and free cheese sticks or an onion loaf to diners who wear their best Christmas-themed clothing to dinner.

Walls acknowledged that even without a National Steak Day – for now, at least – there are still plenty of reasons to eat, drink and be meaty.

“We do have a National Beef Month, and that’s a good start,” said Walls. “That’s why we’re doing our part to spread some Steakmas cheer throughout the month of May.”

To set the tone for the Steakmas season, Hoss’s has recruited members of the Harrisburg-based singing trio “What the Dickens” to serve as Steakmas carolers.

The singers will serenade neighborhoods throughout May with songs of celebration, including “Steakmas Bells” and “The 12 Days of Steakmas.”

Other May celebrations at participating Hoss’s locations include three new menu items – the Merry Bourbon Steak, the Jingle Burger and the Steakmas Steak & Pasta. A photo station in each restaurant also will allow diners to upload Steakmas-inspired photos via social media.

And, because Steakmas is the season for giving, all diners who buy a certain amount in Hoss’s gift cards will receive a free Jingle Burger during their next visit.
