State Rep. Rick Mirabito visits the Learning Center

State Rep. Rick Mirabito recently visited the students at the Learning Center at the James V. Brown Library.

The Learning Center is a ProLiteracy America affiliate adult basic education provider that works to equip Lycoming County adults with the basic literacy skills they need to be better family members, workers and community members. It is a service of the Lycoming County Library System and is a United Way agency.

Learning Center student Gary Schoonmaker invited Mirabito to visit the class and see the difference it is making the lives of the students. He hopes Mirabito will help find additional support for transportation of the students to the Learning Center.

While at the Learning Center, students told the representative about their future career goals. Mirabito stressed the importance of education and literacy.

The students in the class meet daily during the week from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., depending on the skills with which they need assistance. Students are taught by Linda Herr, literacy program coordinator, and Rob Getz, adult education instructor.

The Learning Center is located at 19 E. Fourth St., Williamsport, on the third floor of the Welch Children’s Wing at the James V. Brown Library. Services are free and include one-on-one tutoring, small group studies, math and writing assistance, a comprehensive computer lab, Family Literacy programs, English as a second language and workplace skills programs.
