Friends Bookstore: A ‘best-kept secret’

February is National Library Lovers’ Month. The month provides a good opportunity for the community to appreciate the services, outreach and collections of the James V. Brown Library.

However, patrons of the Friends Bookstore often say that it is “the best-kept secret in the Library,” and they wish more people knew about it.

The bookstore is located on the third floor of the Welch Children’s Wing. It is open for business from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Mondays and Fridays; from 1:30-4:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Wednesdays; 12:15-3 p.m. Saturdays; and closed Thursdays and Sundays.

Gently used books in all subjects including children’s books, CDs and DVDs are available at a cost. Members of the Friends of the J.V. Brown Library sort book donations and select titles that are current and in excellent condition for sale in the store. New materials constantly are added to the shelves.

The Bookstore, along with the semiannual book sales, provide the two major fundraising activities presented by the Friends. Money raised supplements programs and services beyond the regular library budget.

Ardythe Cross, president of the Friends’ Board and a Bookstore volunteer, said the book store provides a win-win situation for all concerned.

“Donors can pass their books along to other readers,” Cross said.

“Our customers get an opportunity to purchase affordable books and financially benefit the library at the same time. We even have book drop-off days when people can bring their books for donation to the library and volunteers will help unload the cars at the curb. The next one is March 25, from noon to 2 p.m.”
