Brown Library offers free job and career resources

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, Williamsport has a 5.6 percent unemployment rate with growth seen in the education, health services and leisure and hospitality industries.

The James V. Brown Library, 19 E. Fourth St., has the free resources available to help you find your new job through POWER Library and LearningExpress.

POWER Library is an online portal offered by Pennsylvania libraries and offers free access to Job Gateway, the state’s premier job-matching tool developed to transform the landscape of how job-seekers find jobs and how employers find talent. The user-friendly job-matching system was created to connect employers and job seekers all in one place, and is a service of the PA CareerLink.

In JobGateway, job seekers have access to thousands of job openings. They are able to upload an existing resume or use the system to create one. Job seekers also can subscribe to email alerts for job openings and choose to allow employers to search for them based on the information they provide. The Big Interview tool helps job seekers practice with mock virtual interviews.

For veterans, a Military to Civilian Translator helps veterans transition into the work force by translating their existing military skills into civilian terms.

Veterans who register in the system are identified with an American flag next to their name, making them easily identifiable to employers seeking to hire them.

Use the LearningExpress database at the www.jvbrown.edu, for free job and career accelerator services. Users can explore occupations, create professional resumes and cover letters, practice interviewing skills and search local and national job and internship postings.

There are tutorials on how to fill out an online application with sample forms, and “Expert Advice Library” and “Experienced Jobseekers” sections for more advanced job seekers.

The Career Center will help users prepare for a career exam, explore occupations and improve workplace skills. Users can take practice tests for entrance and occupation exams, along with the ASVAB military aptitude test and Test of English for International Communication.

These services support the PA Forward state initiative by providing social and civic literacy opportunities for learning and highlighting the transformative nature of public libraries within a community. Libraries contribute to education, employment, entrepreneurship, engagement and empowerment but often are overlooked as catalysts for powerful individual and community change.

The James V. Brown Library is open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday; noon to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday; and 24/7 at www.jvbrown.edu.
