SATURDAY

• PENNSDALE — The Williamsport Deatchment No. 388 Marine Corps League will hold a hot dog and soda sale from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Gander Mountain, 66 Mall Parkway.

• The Friends of the James V. Brown Library are seeking donations of books, DVDs, audiobooks and CDs to support fundraising activities.

Donations can be dropped off today from noon to 2 p.m. by the library’s east-side entrance on State Street between the city parking lot and East Fourth Street.

The donated materials will be sold at the Friends Book Store on the third floor of the Welch Children’s wing and at the semiannual book sales. Funds generated contribute to library programming beyond the normal budget allocation.

Donated books also may be dropped off at the circulation desk from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday through Friday; noon to 5 p.m., Saturday and Sunday.

Donations should not include textbooks, encyclopedias, magazines or books damaged by mold and mildew.

• LEWISBURG — Nancy Neuman, of Lewisburg, past national president of the League of Women Voters, and Bruce Teeple, of Aaronsburg, historian and writer, will present a program on the Women’s Suffrage Movement and the reaction in Union County to the fight for women’s rights to vote at 1 p.m. at the Public Library for Union County, 255 Reitz Blvd.

• The Williamsport Area Swim Club will hold the Lumber Jack Corporate Challenge Relay as part of the sixth annual Lumber Jack Triathlon on Aug. 19 at the DuBoistown Boat Club.

The triathlon features two races — the sprint, which includes a 1/2-mile swim, a 13.7-mile bike ride and a 3.1-mile run; and an Olympic distance, which includes a .9-mile swim, a 24.8-mile bike ride and a 6.2-mile run.

Companies may sign up as an individual or teams of two or three. Team members may do one or more of each leg of the race. There will be awards for the organization that wins the relay race and also the company with the most participation. The course will be chip timed.

Registration is required and available the day of the event.

All proceeds benefit the Williamsport Area Swim Club and the Williamsport Education Foundation.

Aug. 20

• The Thomas T. Taber Museum of the Historical Society, 858 W. Fourth St., will host its August society program “The Old Pine Street Burying Ground — A Chronicle of Desecration,” presented by Bruce Huffman at 2 p.m. in the Community Room of the museum.

Many have heard the block on which Williamsport’s Old City Hall was built used to be a graveyard. Few know its “deep” and complicated history or the timeline of events that led to its continued desecration.

This program commemorates the once sacred burial ground’s “official” end, 150 years ago this summer.

Huffman is a historical investigator and researcher focusing on his ancestors’ construction business, W. H. C. Huffman & Sons.

On the third Sunday of the month (May through October) the Taber Museum offers free admission.
