The James V. Brown Library, 19 E. Fourth St., will host the program, “Music of the Birds,” at 6 p.m. Oct. 16.

The program will feature two presenters who will look at bird songs and music in two different ways.

Sara Scott, voice faculty member at Lycoming College, will showcase some musical works influenced by birdsong. Elements of nature influences the arts in many ways, and during this presentation, we will explore how the “music of the birds” has influenced composers like Janequin, Beach and the composer/ornithologist Messiaen. We will be listening to musical excerpts by these composers and identifying what music of the birds we can hear.

For the second half of the Music of the Birds program, Gary Metzger, chapter vice-president, and other Lycoming Audubon Society birders will present a visual and audio tour of the vocalizations of some of Pennsylvania’s most interesting sounding birds. Can you really leave those binoculars at home and simply bird by ear? How do vocalizations vary depending on the season, time of day, specific activity of a given bird or flock of birds and other factors?
