Thankful for family all over the world

Looking out over the table on Thanksgiving day, the first thing someone may be thankful for is their family. A big reason for that may be that their grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins were always around the table for that dinner.

For me personally, family has always been what I was most thankful about when sitting down for dinner but in most cases, I would just be sitting down to dinner with my parents. Sometimes we would visit my aunt and her kids and their families in Luzerne County for Thanksgiving, but other years our table was much less populated.

Really what I was thankful for when I said family was that I may not have had a big extended family where I grew up but my parents and I were able to spend time with some of our family members quite far away from where we live other times of the year. My mother’s sister lives in Arizona and we had spent two Christmas’ with her and my aunt, uncle, grandparents and cousins on my father’s side all live in Greece and ever since I was small we would make trips in the summer to spend time with them and help them when we could.

Despite the fact that I had grown up without always having a lot of family at dinner on Thanksgiving, I was always grateful that it never did feel that way. Our big extended family always felt like it was down the street.

Recently I made a road trip to my family in Iowa. I drove hours away from my home and it felt like no matter what direction I drove I could find family.

I’ve always been thankful for the family I’ve had both close and across the Alantic because no matter if I was traveling to Pittston, Pennsylvania or Salatnitika, Greece, I knew that I was home.
