Girls on the Run of Greater Susquehanna Valley hold celebratory 5K
More than 1,200 girls, spectators, volunteers and community members recently gathered for the Girls on the Run of Greater Susquehanna Valley 5K event, the culminating moment of the Girls on the Run season.
“Completing the Girls on the Run 5K gives our participants a tangible sense of accomplishment. It is the perfect opportunity for us to show our girls that no goal is out of reach and no dream is too big,” said Shannon Butters, executive director.
Girls on the Run is a nationally known physical activity-based, positive youth development program that uses fun running games and dynamic discussions to teach life skills to girls in third to eighth grades. During the 10-week program, girls participate in lessons that foster confidence, build peer connections and encourage community service while they prepare for the end-of-season celebratory 5K event.
Across seven counties, including Lycoming, Columbia, Montour, Juniata, Northumberland, Union and Snyder, more than 90 trained volunteer coaches facilitated the curriculum to 23 teams of girls this season, helping equip them with the physical and emotional skills necessary to carry them over the 5K finish line at Susquehanna University.
