The Salvation Army Santa Fund

Dear Santa,

I trust all is going well at your home at the North Pole. You sometimes seem so far away most of the time.

However as Christmas Day approaches you seem very close by. There is an old English Christmas Carol that asks the question: “How far is it to Bethlehem? Not very far. Shall we find the stable room, Lit by a star? Can we see the little Child? Is He within?”

When I was a child my mom taught me that Santa is never far away, after all “he sees you when your sleeping and he knows when you’re awake”! As I matured my mother’s words became clearer. Even in adulthood, Santa, or as my parents would later explain, is the spirit of giving and sharing, is very much apart of who we are as we celebrate the most important event in history: the birth of the Christ Child.

Many times in life, especially when we are hurting or doing without many of things most of take for granted, God can seem very far away. For some the thinking is that there is no God at all or perhaps if God is there, He isn’t interested in me. Of course the Bible and my own experience teaches me that God is not only interested in me He has prepared a way for me to live a life filled with joy and peace that can only come from Heaven.

And while the thought of you Santa can bring a smile to my face, truly knowing the Savior from Bethlehem brings real and lasting gifts that will bring me to Eternity with a heart filled with what only God can give. If Christmas seems far away to anyone you know Santa, please remind them to look within and without for the One who makes Christmas and the other 364 days of the year meaningful and complete.

“How far is it to Bethlehem? Not very far.”

Merry Christmas!
