Clara Gerber celebrates 100 years

Clara Gerber, of Loyalsock Township, celebrated her 100th birthday on Valentine’s Day, Feb. 14, 2018. The Gerber Family held a large family reunion in honor of her at Saint Joseph the Worker Parish Hall on Saturday.

Gerber was born, Clara Magdalen Luxenberger, at the Williamsport Hospital on Feb. 14, 1918. She was raised by her grandparents. She entered school at the Mountain Ave. School in South Williamsport in 1924 and graduated from St. Joseph’s High School in 1936.

On Oct. 22, 1937, Clara married Ambrose Gerber from Mauch Chunk (Jim Thorpe). He came to Williamsport looking for work. He worked at Bethlehem Steel. Ambrose died on May 11, 1974. They had 12 children. Five of their children are deceased, Charles, Marie Kiessling, Laurence (Larry), Daniel and Carla Szybist. Clara also has sons, Paul, of Williamsport; Michael, of Mingloville; Ramon, of Lansdale; Joseph, of Williamsport; and Girard (Jerry), of Lake Worth, Florida. Her daughters are Alice Hirschle, of Dubois, and Christina Weitlich, of Cogan Station.

Clara has a sharp mind and lives with her son in their home. Some of her favorite pastimes have been cooking, reading, writing letters, playing scrabble, playing cards and doing crossword puzzles. She also enjoys visiting and spending time with her family.

Clara has 26 grandchildren, 44 great grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
