JVB Check It Out: Ready Rosie and Wonderpolis apps offer free summer activities

The James V. Brown Library understands that children and parents like supplemental activities to do together when storytime is not in session. To help parents and caregivers provide opportunities for early learning, Youth Services Librarian Nina White suggests two apps: Ready Rosie and Wonderopolis.

Ready Rosie, a free online program for residents of Lycoming County, has announced that summer activities and videos will be available to help local families make learning easy, educational and fun.

There are 10 weeks of “Summer Soar” playlists that focus on games and activities families can do together to promote family interaction, problem-solving and social, emotional, math and motor skills in children, infants to third grade.

For instance, parents can try the “Red Light, Green Light” video. Not only does it get children outside playing, but it also reinforces the following:

• Working memory — child has to pay attention to what is being said and process at the same time

• Inhibitory control — child has to control the body to stop or go depending on the command

• Flexible memory — when you change up the game to ‘purple light, brown light,’ the child has to take what is known and apply it in a new context

To sign up for Ready Rosie, visit readyrosie.com/register or download the free app from the App Store or Google Play. Funding for this program is provided by the Lycoming County Commissioners.

Wonderopolis is a free online learning website full of interactive STEM and literacy-building topics with a corresponding app. The summer program — Camp Wonderopolis, https://camp.wonderopolis.org/ — is designed to help build vocabulary, background knowledge in science, reading comprehension, critical thinking, and other literacy skills along the way. When you register as a Camper (kids of all ages) or Counselor (parents, community and library program staff, teachers), you’ll enjoy learning through wonder — an approach honed by the award-winning Wonderopolis.org.

These online resources also can be found on the “Youth” section of the library’s website.

The James V. Brown Library is open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday; noon to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday; and 24/7 at www.jvbrown.edu.
