Lycoming County Special Olympic attends 50th annual Summer Game
Special Olympic Pennsylvania held its 50th Annual Summer Games at Penn State University in State College recently. The annual Summer Games is the largest statewide competition bringing more than 2,000 athletes and 750 coaches from across the state together to compete in aquatics, athletics, basketball, equestrian, golf, gymnastics, softball and tennis. Lycoming County Special Olympics sent a delegation of 10 athletes and seven volunteers to participate in this statewide competition.
Competing in aquatics were athletes Tyler Green, Nick Johnson, Kyle Powell, James Steinruck and Jacob, with Anthony Fischetti and Stephen Huyck participating in athletics and Neil Schweicart competing in individual skills basketball. The athletes received a total of eight gold, seven silver and five bronze medals along with five ribbons for fourth and fifth place finishes.
The preliminary competitions were followed by the Opening Ceremonies at Pegula Ice Arena. This celebrated the 50th anniversary of Summer Games with a short video and welcome by special guests featuring entertainment by the State College Area High School Band, performances by the arts club Harmony and the Lighting of the Olympic Cauldron.
The competition concluded with a Victory Dance presented by Comcast, in the Pegula Ice Arena.
