Lewisburg High School’s oldest living alumna turns 102

LEWISBURG — RiverWoods Senior Living Community resident Marion Rose celebrated her 102nd birthday on Aug. 19, surrounded by family and friends. Marion was born in Reading and moved to Lewisburg, where she graduated from Lewisburg High School and is the oldest living alumna in the district.

Marion is a member of the First Baptist Church of Lewisburg, where she taught Sunday School and served as the financial secretary for more than 25 years. A birthday reception for Marion was held at the church on Aug. 18.

Marion was married to the late Harry Vernon Rose. They celebrated 49 years of marriage together before he passed away in 1994. She has four children, Larry Rose, of Lewisburg, Mary Ann Calpin, of East Stroudsburg, Judy Mickanis, of Lewisburg, and the late Rick Rose, of Gainesville, Florida. She has six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Before retiring, Marion was employed by Bucknell University, where she served as the first human resource director for the university. Marion actively volunteered for many non-profit organizations and helped start the Union County Food Distribution. She also volunteered many countless hours for the Meals on Wheels program. One of Marion’s favorite pastimes was knitting and she enjoys knitting “prayer shawls” for Christ Lutheran Church.

Marion likes birdwatching, loves flowers and gardening, walking and is an avid reader. Marion also loves spending time with her family and friends.
