Connect Williamsport presents photo contest
Connect Williamsport and the James V. Brown Library are offering amateur and professional photographers the opportunity to have their work put in front of some of the area’s leading photographers, gallery curators and artists. What’s more, entrants will have the chance to see their work featured on the Connect Williamsport community calendar homepage at www.connectwilliamsport.com.
The project is the result of years of planning by the staff and Board of Directors of the James V. Brown Library, along with other community partners. The comprehensive project was funded with federal Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) funds from the Institute of Museum and Library Services and administered by the Office of Commonwealth Libraries.
“Connect Williamsport is a great way to highlight what is going on in the Greater Williamsport area,” said Dana Brigandi, community partner liaison for the website. Brigandi has been able to utilize her contacts to increase the number of registered community partners on the site to nearly 300.
The idea for the contest started with a meeting between the James V. Brown Library’s development director Robin Glossner and Street Light Photography owner Ralph Wilson. Glossner was looking for a way to showcase not only the new Connect Williamsport website, but some of the First Friday events happening at the James V. Brown.
“Most people know of the Pajama Factory as a destination on First Fridays,” Brigandi said, “but we’d like to draw some attention to the James V. Brown.”
“We have many talented photographers in this area and this is a great way to highlight their work,” Glossner added.
“The gorgeous recent weather, along with the many summer activities already taking place should make for some incredible scenes.”
Judges include Sun-Gazette Photographer Rashelle Carey, photographer Ralph Wilson, Pennsylvania College of Technology Gallery Curator Lenore Penfield, photographer Terry Wild, and Sun-Gazette Arts and Entertainment Editor Matthew Parrish.
The winners will have their photo used on the sliders on the Connect Williamsport homepage. The photos may also be used in other Connect Williamsport marketing materials.
The judges will select one winner and one honorable mention in each category. Winners and honorable mentions will be displayed at the First Friday celebration at the James V. Brown Library in September and at the Pajama Factory.
The pictures must be taken in Lycoming County. Photographs should highlight the best of local events in activities in the following categories: arts, music and entertainment, special events, family fun, downtown nightlife, community and local government, business and education, games and sports and health and wellness.
“The photos draw you in because they aren’t just stock photos – they are pictures of our family, friends and neighbors taking part in the wide array of activities available in our community,” Brigandi said.
Photographers submitting their work via email should include their contact information (name, phone, address, preferred email [if different from the one used to submit]) and the details of their photograph(s) (title, where it was shot, intended category).
Entries will be accepted through July 15 and entrants are limited to one entry per category. For onscreen use, entries must be jpg format and at least 520 by 260 pixels, and for print, must be able to be printed with no loss of detail at 8-by-10 inches. The library will take care of the final printing and a resolution of 300 to 330 pixels per inch is recommended for digital files intended for print.
