The Wailers to perform at A Bear’s Picnic

Bob Marley and the Wailers have become a household name in the genre of reggae and Jamaican culture. Though Marley is no longer with us, the Wailers have continued to perform in his honor.

The band has been touring the world through the summer and will make stops in Ottawa, Canada, and Dublin, Ireland. The Wailers also will perform at A Bear’s Picnic at 8:45 p.m. Saturday at the Lycoming County Fairgrounds, Route 405, Hughesville.

The Wailers have only put out a few records since Marley’s death in 1981, their last one being “Heritage of Dub” in 2000. Fans have yet to get tired of hearing their classic steady rock and reggae beats which has kept them together, along with original member, Aston ‘Family Man’ Barrett.

“[Barrett] is the captain that keeps us together and the energy flowing,” said Dwayne ‘Danglin’ Anglin, lead vocalist since 2003.

At shows the band plays popular songs from the Bob Marley and the Wailer’s 1984 album “Legend.”

“Marley lives on in his music, his children and the band,” he said.

Anglin said that though the band does not come out with new albums, they are still zealous about their purpose and mission as group which keeps the Wailers passionate about tour and their music.

“The mission is to bring the vibration of Rastafarianism around the world and encourage people to stay positive,” he said.

According to Merriam-Webster, Rastafarianism is a religious movement that “teaches the eventual redemption of blacks and their return to Africa, employs the ritualistic use of marijuana, forbids the cutting of hair, and venerates Haile Selassie as a god.”

Anglin explained that their music is based on this movement which stands for positive vibrations and equality for all mankind.

“[Our music] is root rock, reggae, it’s an expression of freedom, love and character,” he said. “It’s about unity and love, it’s what needs to get to the four corners of the world.”

One way that the Wailers are helping in making the world a place where there is unity and equality is by raising money for the World Food Programme.

The World Food Programme is an organization through the United Nations that helps with food aid in order to eradicate hunger and poverty in more than 90 countries.

“We carry the message around the world with our music and support the Programme with all we can,” said Anglin. “We sell t-shirts and all the proceeds go to that.”
