Williamsport Music Club opens season with dinner meeting
The Williamsport Music Club opened the 2013-14 season with a dinner meeting at the home of Lois and Claude Williams on Sept. 24, followed by the business meeting and program.
Led by club president Bonnie Horn, the business meeting included a presentation of the new budget. The song of the month is “The Battle Cry of Freedom,”?written and composed by George F. Root and presented by Dorothy Maples with accompiment by Joanne Kiehl.
Dr. Charles Getchell led members in a sing-along with bells. Each person used a song sheet especially marked to show when to ring the correspondending bell. Songs included hymns, “old favorites”?and Broadway melodies.
Getchell originally developed this method to support congregational hymn sings for various local churches. Later he added songs designed to appeal to seniors in a secular setting. During December he uses song sheets with Advent and Christmas hymns as well as carols and secular Christmas songs.
A member of the Lycoming College Emeritus faculty, Getchell now enjoys music, gardening and a large family. He currently sings with the Williamsport Chamber Choir, the Lock?Haven Community Chorus, the Senior Singers at Lock Haven Hospital and Liberty (Lock Haven Parish) and Pine Street United Methodist Church choirs.
