Campus Theatre to host ‘The Hendrix of the Sahara’ in concert Oct. 16
LEWISBURG – Vieux Farka Tour will perform in concert at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Campus Theatre, 413 Market St. Doors open at 7 p.m.
The performance, presented by the Weis Center for the Performing Arts at Bucknell, is free and open to the public; tickets are not required.
Vieux Farka Tour was born in Niafunk, Mali, in 1981, the son of late legendary Malian guitar player Ali Farka Tour.
His fluid guitar runs, which earned him the nickname “the Hendrix of the Sahara,” merge Western rock influences with Saharan trance-blues groove into a sound uniquely his own.
His 2009 release, “Fondo,” peaked at No. 5 on Billboard’s World Albums chart and was included on The Village Voice’s Top 100 list.
That release showcased a stirring mix of traditional instruments and modern production featuring bluesy, funky Afro-pop from West Africa.
In June 2010, Tour performed at the opening concert for the FIFA World Cup in South Africa. In 2011 he released his third studio album, “The Secret,” so named because the listener will hear the secret of the blues with a blend of generations from father to son.
It was produced by guitarist Eric Krasno and features South African-born vocalist Dave Matthews, Derek Trucks on electric slide guitar and jazz guitarist John Scofield.
In April 2012, Tour released “The Tel Aviv Session,” a collaborative project with Israeli superstar Idan Raichel dubbed “The Toure-Raichel Collective” that has been hailed by fans and critics alike as one of the best collaborative albums in the history of international music.
In 2013, his beautiful and critically acclaimed latest album “Mon Pays” (translated as “My Country”) was released as an homage to his homeland.
As Mali had been splintered by territorial fighting between Tuareg and Islamic rebels since January 2012, “Mon Pays” was devoted to reminding the world about the beauty and culture of his native Mali.
This tour engagement of Vieux Farke Tour is made possible by a grant from Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation with support from the National Endowment for the Arts.
The next performance in the Weis Center’s 2013-14 Series is classical ensemble Pacifica Quartet at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 19 at the Weis Center.
