Festival to feature concert band music

The Repasz Band will host the fourth annual Liberty Classic Community Band Festival with a free public concert beginning at 1:30 p.m. Oct. 20 at the Community Arts Center. The festival is a gathering and celebration of some of the world’s best concert band music.

Under the baton of band master Col. Arnald D. Gabriel, USAF Band (retired), the festival band will open their concert with the nationally standard arrangement of “The Star Spangled Banner” arranged by George Werle. The dramatic, intense and exciting “Festive Overture” by Dmitri Shostakovich will lead the charge. An eastern European flavor will season the mix with Carl Friedman’s “Slavonic Rhapsody.”

Immortal Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s finale to his “Symphony No. 4” will test the band’s spirit and electrify the audience. Bringing a savory touch from the world of dance will include “Le Cid Ballet Music” by Jules Massenet.

Finally the spirit of the grand traditional American park bandshell will thrill to the strains of Sousa’s “Liberty Loan March, Gettysburg” by John Eddelman (from the score of the movie of the same name), the entertaining and enjoyable strains of Lerner and Lowes great Broadway musical “My Fair Lady”, and finally the patriotically soaring arrangement of A”merica The Beautiful” arranged by legendary Hollywood music man Carmen Dragon.

The Liberty Classic Community Band Festival is hosted by Williamsport’s historic Repasz Band, a community force since 1831. Its purpose is to provide “outstanding musical experiences for dedicated musicians and to enrich the lives of those who share our love for performing the highest quality band literature.

The Festival is designed to nurture and promote community appreciation for music, while providing quality music performances for and on behalf of the residents of the City of Williamsport and the surrounding communities.”

The Festival is a three-day event from Oct. 18 to 20, replete with rehearsals, social occasions, a banquet and a grand public concert.

Rehearsals and social occasions will be located at the Genetti Hotel throughout the event. The concert for this festival is free and open to the public at the Community Arts Center, 220 W. Fourth St.
