Rocktoberfest kicks off fall
For all who love the combination of beer and live music, The Cell Block, 154 W. Third St., will be hosting “Rocktoberfest” on Saturday, which will feature live music all day.
“This is our first Rocktoberfest party but we are hoping to make it into an annual event,” Josh Hertwig, owner and manager of the Cell Block, said. Hertwig said the purpose of the event will be “to have an awesome time!”
Despite this being the first time that this event is occurring, Hertwig said “we are anticipating a very busy night, hoping to have well over 1,000 people through the door that day.”
Hertwig said that his favorite part of the event will be “watching all the great bands that will be performing that day.”
“We chose the most popular bands that play in the area,” Hertwig said.
The event will start at noon and will feature Emily’s Toybox, Candlelight Red and Gypsy Wisdom as the three headlining bands.
Of the headlining bands, Emily’s Toybox, a modern rock band from Harrisburg, will perform first. Emily’s Toybox has been around since 1997, and the band has had a long and ever-growing career since their debut, according to their official website.
When touring they have ventured far out of the state, as far out as Florida, and they continue to play monthly shows all over the greater area of Pennsylvania.
Performing after Emily’s Toybox, at 5:30 p.m., will be Candlelight Red. Hailing from right here in Williamsport, the band has been around since 2008, and have since released two studio albums and an E.P. Their most recent album “Reclamation” along with their E.P. “Demons” were both produced by Morgan Rose of Sevendust, and the band is currently signed to Imagen Records.
The band is no stranger to success, having performed as a part of the 2012 Rockstar Energy Uproar Festival, taking the same stage as hugely popular bands Avenged Sevenfold and Disturbed.
The final band to perform that night will be Philadelphia-based band Gypsy Wisdom.
“We sound just like the radio playing your favorite song,” lead vocalist of the band Courtney Jansen, said. “We don’t do originals as a band … yet.”
Formed three years ago as a six-piece band, Gypsy Wisdom plays covers of all genres, everything from pop and rock to alternative, along with a little bit of country.
“Our band name symbolizes the fact that we travel every weekend to different cities gaining wisdom from each new experience,” Jansen said of the band’s unique name.
The band is not new to playing at the Cell Block as they have “been playing the Cell Block since day one as a band. Quite literally, actually, as the Cell Block stage-housed our very first performance as a band together.
“It was an electric night and we had many after that night three years ago. We love the level of energy and spirit the Williamsport crowds brings to the gallows,” Jansen said.
Gypsy Wisdom hopes to provide an electrifying concert experience for the crowd; Jansen said, “We plan on hitting them hard from note one and building on the vibe, which we’re positive will be a loud, sing-a-long, ‘drinks in the air’ kinda rage!”
“We are always looking for the next big thing,” Hertwig said as to why he decided to put on Rocktoberfest this year.
“We feel that this event will be something that our customers will look forward to every year.”
