Up, Up, and Away — ‘Boeing, Boeing’ flies in to CTL

The Community Theatre League will perform the hilarious comedy “Boeing Boeing” beginning Nov. 8 at 100 W. Third St. Director Marie Fox has assembled a cast of new and old faces at CTL for this classic comedy from the writer of “Happy Birthday” and “Don’t Dress For Dinner,” Marc Camoletti. “Boeing Boeing” recently enjoyed hit revivals in London and New York.

The setting is the 1960s, and swinging bachelor Bernard (played by David Whitman) couldn’t be happier – he’s got a flat in Paris and three gorgeous stewardesses all engaged to him without knowing about each other. But Bernard’s perfect life gets bumpy when his friend Robert (played by Brian McKeon) comes to stay and a new and speedier Boeing jet throws off all of his careful planning. Soon all three stewardesses are in town simultaneously, timid Robert is forgetting which lies to tell to whom and catastrophe looms.

Whitman’s Bernard is a randy bachelor reminiscent of Austin Powers. McKeon’s Robert is simple and timid. Add in Steve Lindenmuth as Bernard’s housekeeper Berthe and the laughs keep coming. Bernard’s fiancees are played by Tara Shuey, Rachel Hall and Christen Buck, all newcomers to the CTL stage.

Christine Baranski, who played Berthe in the 2008 Broadway revival called the play “a politically incorrect period piece” from the “last period of innocence. Some of its charm is harking back to a time when life could be lived according to an airline timetable. Who can do that now?”

“Boeing Boeing” plays at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 8, 9 and 14-16. A matinee performance will be offered at 2 p.m. Nov. 17. Visit www.ctlshows.com for tickets or call the box office at 570-327-1720, weekdays 11-4.
