Williamsport Music Club to host Nothing But Treble Oct. 22
The Williamsport Music Club will hold its monthly meeting at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 22 at Robert M. Sides Family Music Center, 201 Mulberry St.
Barbara Smith, program chair for the year, has offered a challenge with the theme “A Musical Buffet.” Shirley Knade, program chair for October, has called the program “Spicy Treats.”
The song of the month, “O God, Beneath Thy Guiding Hand” with words by Leonard Bacon set to the tune of “Duke Street,” music by John Hatton, will be presented by Lucy Henry and accompanied by Barbara Hall.
The first “spicy treat” is “Scarborough Fair,” an English folk song arranged by Christopher Ruck, sung by soprano Barbara Smith and accompanied by Shirley Knade.
The mood will change to a classic, “Toccata” from “Toccata and Fugue in D minor” by J.S. Bach, played by organist Richard Lakey. The club also will host a performance from female group “Nothing But Treble,” comprised of Sharon Ippolito, Marisa Hickey, Tess Gist, Denise Connor and Jacquie Engel.
They will add “spicy treats” to the program with the following musical selections: “When Will I Be Loved?,” “Walking On Sunshine,” “Stand By Me,” “Killing Me Softly With His Song,” “You Make Me Feel Like A Natural Woman” and “Dancing Queen.”
Another “spicy” musical mix comes from P.D.Q. Bach, a composer named Peter Shickele whose alter ego is a fictitious member of the Bach family.
The male singing group Gesang Verein Harmonia Mennerchor will perform works including “Art of the Ground Round,” “Please, Kind Sir,” “Jane, My Jane” and “Nellie is a Nice Girl.”
The group includes Len Cagle, Alan Cohick, David Craig, David Doerr, Donald Fisher, Fred Fisher, Mark Fisher, Bob Frederickson, Tim Kohler, Oscar Knade, Robert Lacerra, Joe Laver, Frank Magaro, Francis Powers, Ron Sellinger, Martin Snella, Robert Stopper, William Tomke and Jamie Wither. Micahel Connor is director of the group and Jeff Johnson is the accompanist.
“Nothing But Treble” will then return, singing “Fields of Gold,” “I Hope You Dance,” “Always Be My Baby,” “Lullaby (Goodnight, My Angel),” “Sweet Dreams” and “Turn the Beat Around.”
Hostesses for the evening will be Lee and Carol Waltz. The program is free and open to the public. The Williamsport Music Club is a federated member of the state and national music clubs.
