Weis Center to host pianist Gabriela Martinez Friday

LEWISBURG – Venezuelan-born pianist Gabriela Martinez will perform at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Weis Center for the Performing Arts.

The program will include Rachmaninoff’s “Moment Musicaux Op 16, No. 1”; Brosse’s “Nocturne No. 1”; Barber’s “Ballade”; Bates’ “White Lies for Lomax”; Liszt’s “Sonet 104”; Rachmaninoff’s “Moment Musicaux Op 16, No. 4”; and Beethoven’s “Piano Sonata Op 110 in A Flat Major.”

Kathryn Maguet, executive director of the Weis Center, said, “I had the opportunity to experience the magnificent artistry of Gabriela Martinez last winter. She’s a remarkably accomplished and elegant pianist who is on the brink of a major concert artist career. I expect that classical music fans will be singing her praises for many, many years.”

Born in Caracas in 1984, Martinez began her piano studies with her mother Alicia Gaggioni, and studied with Miyoko Lotto at the Perlman Music Program. She earned a Bachelor of Music and a Master of Music from The Juilliard School as a full scholarship student of Yoheved Kaplinsky, and a doctorate with Professor Marco Antonio de Almeida in Halle, Germany.

Martinez has won numerous national and international prizes and awards. Her most recent accomplishments include first prize and audience award at the Anton G. Rubinstein International Piano Competition in Dresden. She was a semifinalist at the 12th Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, where she also received a Jury Discretionary Award. Her career includes world premieres of new music, live performance broadcasts, and interviews on TV and radio.
