Local musicians to play Davy Jones tribute
DANVILLE – Local musicians Chris Pick and John Roginski will play tribute to the late frontman of The Monkees, Davy Jones, at 6:30 p.m. May 31 at Brews N’ Bytes, 20 Lower Mulberry St. The event is free.
Besides having been a Monkees fan since the age of 4, Pick has been involved with several projects for Jones for 15 years, such as writing music reviews; tracking down recordings for compilations; researching information for liner notes; and even running his merchandise table at his concerts. Pick’s recent single, “Finally Free” (backed by The Monkeephiles), pays tribute to Jones and is offered as a free download at www.chrispick.bandcamp.com. The lyrics of the song will be featured in the soon-to-be released “Written in Our Hearts Vegetarian Cookbook” to benefit the Davy Jones Equine Memorial Foundation (Davy’s continued rescue horse foundation). Also included will be some of Pick’s personal memories of his experiences with Jones, as well as some memories and recipes from Jones’s former bandmates Micky Dolenz and Peter Tork. Pick performed at Jones’s memorial in 2013 for the unveiling of the Davy Jones statue in Beavertown and will return for the 2014 memorial on June 28 (also present will be Valerie Kairys Venet and The Monkeemobile).
John Roginski and Paul Venturi met in 2006 and eventually formed the “Monkeephiles.” They released a CD project in 2013 and performed at the 2013 Davy Jones Beavertown Memorial and the 2014 Monkees convention.
