Stephanie Calhoun to be Bald Eagle Art League artist of the month at Genetti

Stephanie Calhoun is the Bald Eagle Art League artist exhibiting for the month of July at the Genetti 4th Street Grille Gallery, 200 W. Fourth St. The exhibit of her work, “Artistry Beyond the Camera,” will open with a reception from 5-8 p.m. Friday.

Calhoun’s passion is photography. She loves making ordinary subjects extraordinary through photographs. Stephanie lives in Nippenose Valley, a rural farm community, where she gets a lot of inspiration for her pictures. Some of her favorite subjects are trees, barns, animals and landscapes.

She said she became interested in photography about 11 years ago when she got two German Shepherd pups and her husband bought her a 35mm camera. Her desire for other types of photography grew from there.

“I love photography. I’m really passionate about all aspects of it,” Calhoun said. “From finding a subject, choosing the best composition and then editing – I love it all. Editing is where I can show my artistic vision for the emotion I want to convey. This can consist of anything from bumping up the contrast to adding textures, giving the photo a whole new look. Textures add color, drama and interest, allowing me to express myself artistically within the limitations of this two-dimensional medium.”

“My use of textures has some people asking ‘Are these photos or paintings?’ ” she added. “I feel proud and know the extra time and work I put into that piece was worth it. This has added an artistic flare to my work that has been well received by viewers.”

The exhibit is open to the public during regular 4th Street Grille hours through July 26. For more information, visit www.baldeagleartleague.weebly.com.
