U.S. Army Field Band to present free concert at Susquehanna University

SELINSGROVE – The internationally-acclaimed United States Army Field Band and Soldiers’ Chorus of Washington, D.C., will continue its long history of performing free concerts when it comes to Susquehanna University’s Weber Chapel Auditorium at 3 p.m. June 25. The concert also will feature musicians from Susquehanna’s High School Wind Ensemble Institute, which takes place on campus from June 19-25.

Composed of a 65-member instrumental ensemble and 29-member mixed choral ensemble, the concert band and chorus is the oldest and largest of the field band’s four performing components.

The Field Band, founded in 1946, has performed concerts in all 50 states and 30 foreign countries for audiences totaling more than 100 million. Past performance highlights include World War II 50th anniversary commemorations in the United States and Europe, presidential inaugural parades, presidential state funerals, the rededication of the Statue of Liberty, nationally televised broadcasts on Memorial Day and the Fourth of July and the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City. The Field Band’s members are selected by highly competitive audition and represent some of the finest musical talent in America.

The chorus officially was formed in 1957, and combined, the members of the band and chorus represent many states in the U.S. The musical backgrounds of the chorus personnel range from opera and musical theatre to music education and voice coaching.

The Wind Ensemble Institute is a summer performance experience for high school students. Each summer, 54 gifted woodwind, brass and percussion players are invited to the week-long program, during which they live on campus and focus on chamber music and symphonic wind ensemble performance.

“Performances by the U.S. Army Field Band are always impressive,” said Eric Hinton, associate professor of music and director of bands at Susquehanna. “What makes this time so special is that students in the High School Wind Ensemble Institute at Susquehanna University will have the opportunity to perform alongside these amazing musicians.”

The concert band and chorus presents a powerful and diverse program, ranging from orchestral masterworks and operatic arias to Sousa marches, jazz classics and Broadway musicals.

Tickets for this free event are available now and can be reserved by calling 570-372-4281 or by visiting www.armyfieldband.ticketleap.com/selinsgrove16. Chairs still are available for the Wind Ensemble Institute.
