Family Discovery Series performance kicks off Weis Center’s spring season

The Weis Center will kick-off its spring performing arts season with a Family Discovery Series performance, Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia: Brown Bear, Brown Bear and Other Treasured Stories at 1 p.m. Jan. 21 at 1 p.m. at the Weis Center. The performance is suggested for ages 3-8.

From noon to 1 p.m. the Children’s Museum of Bloomsburg will host free kids activities in the Lobby including a giant interactive mural, mask-making and a light box station.

Mermaid’s much-anticipated new production, “A Brown Bear, A Caterpillar and A Moon: Treasured Stories By Eric Carle,” will bring together old favorites and new friends. Featuring evocative music, stunning visual effects and innovative puppetry, the triple-bill highlights three of Eric Carle’s most beloved tales.

First published in 1967, “Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?” was written by Bill Martin Jr. and illustrated by Eric Carle, and has served to help hundreds of thousands of toddlers to associate colours and meanings to objects. Capturing the rhythmic text and beautiful tissue-paper collage illustrations of the classic picture book, Mermaid’s adaption generates fresh appreciation of the endearing cast of characters.

The poignant story of a young girl’s unusual quest, “Papa, Please Get the Moon For Me,” has been delighting young audiences since its publication in 1986.

Rounding out the three-story performance, Mermaid’s well-travelled “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” (veteran of more than 2,000 performances) eats his way through the week on his path to becoming a beautiful butterfly.

Tickets can be purchased online at Bucknell.edu/BoxOffice or by calling 570-577-1000.

Tickets also are available in person from several locations including the Weis Center lobby (weekdays 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.) and the CAP Center Box Office, located on the ground floor of the Elaine Langone Center (weekdays 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.).
