Saint John’s School of the Arts to offer programs in April

The Saint John’s School of the Arts (SOTA) will hold its annual “Afternoon of Music and Art” on April 22, at Saint John’s-Newberry United Methodist Church, 2101 Newberry St. More than 50 students will share their musical and artistic talents with family and friends during several afternoon programs. Participants range in age from 5 years through adult and represent the school’s art, piano, instrumental, theatre arts and voice departments.

The first recital begins at 1 p.m. with voice students of Sarah Decker, whose students are preparing songs to be offered in a themed recital about “Stories.”

Piano students of Diane Havrilla, instrumental students of Philip Herfort and drama/piano students of Lea Frymire will combine for a separate recital at 1 p.m. At 2 p.m., piano/oboe students of Carol Schwanger and Pamela Hess, along with voice students of Ellen Davis will combine for a recital. At 3 p.m., voice, piano and violin students of Amy Peck will offer a program.

A student art exhibit will be also be featured 1-4 p.m. Art work from students of instructor Jason Paulhamus will showcase a number of subject matters such as nature, landscapes, and celebrity portraits, all done in a variety of mediums. Paulhamus also offers a 5-week introduction to bonsai class several times each year, and several of his bonsai creations will be on display.

In addition to the April 22 programs, several graduating high school seniors will be featured in separate programs at the School of the Arts. The following voice students of Amy Peck will present their “Senior Recital” at 1 p.m. on Saturday: Maris DeWald and Maura Galanti. This program will also feature several selections by junior Liam Gscheidle. At 4 p.m. April 23, the following graduate voice students of Sarah Decker will present their “Senior Recital”: Ellen Boll, Sydney Harris, Kara Hershey, and Alliana Myers. Both senior recitals will be held at the School of the Arts.
