Fourth annual Winter Blues Bash spices up the weekend for a good cause

Eleven area bands are slated to take the stage at the Fourth Annual Winter Blues Bash this Sunday at the Trout Run Hotel, including the Susquehanna Valley’s premier blues/rock band, Mums the Word.

The event starts at 2 p.m. and will also feature The Cadillac Cats, The Twin Sinners, The Jeff Fetterman Band, the Dirty Mo Jo Blues Band, Mystery Trayn, Miz Ida and the All-Nighters, The Tickles, Mike and Shannon, The Ann Kerstetter Band and Gabe Stillman and the Billtown Giants.

There is no set admission to the event, but donations are accepted at the door. Proceeds from the event will help pay for The Jeff Fetterman Band and The Twin Sinners to attend the International Blues Convention in Memphis in January.

The Twin Sinners won the Billtown Blues Association audition concert last March and as a result were guaranteed a spot in the 28th annual Billtown Blues Festival (held this past June), and also receive eligibility to travel to Memphis to participate in the prestigious IBC scheduled for January 2018. The Jeff Fetterman Band and won the BBA’s audition concert in the band category. The IBC is the largest gathering of blues bands in the world. Shane Kelly-Woodward plays slide guitar and lap steel for Mums the Word, and is excited for the yearly event.

“We are a three-piece power trio that can rock you ’til you drop, soothe you with a soulful, gut wrenching slow blues, or get your toes tapping with an upbeat country-rock number,” said Kelly-Woodward.

Because the bassist doubles on saxophone and Kelly-Woodward plays lap steel, they can be very versatile in their shows.

“Our live shows are full of energy and we throw in a little comedy,” he said.

Mums the Word“also includes members Michael Mummey, drums and vocals and Steve “Blue Lou” Loukas on bass, vocals and saxophone. The band formed in 2015 and is based in Williamsport.

The members of Mums the Word bring together more than 100 years of professional musical experience and are heavily influenced not only by guitar driven bands like Johnny Winter, Eric Clapton, Leslie West and Gary Moore, but by a wide range of musical styles including jazz, funk and country. The band is currently booking shows in the Central PA area and rehearsing and writing material for their upcoming CD.

In the past the group came in second place at the International Blues Competition and has opened for national acts such as Jimmy Thackery.

This is Mums the Word’s second year as one of the featured bands at the Winter Blues Bash but they have performed in a variety of locations around the Susquehanna Valley including The Genetti, The Valley Inn, Route 61 Roadhouse and numerous times on the Hiawatha.

Doors to the Winter Blues Bash open at 2 p.m. and Mums the Word will take the stage at 5 p.m. The Trout Run Hotel is located at 88 Confair Lane, Trout Run.
