Winter Theatre Arts Camp to open Jan. 2

Seventy-four third through ninth graders who live in the Southern Tioga and Wellsboro Area school districts will learn about theater arts as they prepare for public performances of the musical fantasy “Willy Wonka Junior” during Hamilton-Gibson’s Winter Theatre Arts Camp.

“Willy Wonka Junior” is a musical adaptation of Roald Dahl’s timeless story of the world-famous candy man and his quest to find an heir to continue candy confectioning in his magical and mysterious chocolate factory.

The camp is being held after school until 5:30 p.m. on Jan 2-5 and Jan. 8-11 as well as from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Jan. 6 in the auditorium located next door to the Blossburg Elementary School on Hannibal Street.

Willy Wonka is played by Karsen Kennedy, a ninth grader at Wellsboro Area High School, Charlie Bucket by Stephen Ruth, a seventh grader and Charlie’s Grandpa Joe by ninth grader Alan Weed. Ruth and Weed are students at North Penn-Mansfield Junior Senior High School. Other cast members with speaking roles include: Mrs. Bucket played by Naomi Ruth; Mr. Bucket by Aiden Gehman; Grandma Georgina by Sky Dayton; Grandpa George by Benjamin Osborne; James by Luke Rothermel; Matilda by Jenny Decamp; the seven Phineous Trouts by Noah Vickery, Katie Mossman, Jessica Cummings, Mallory Milheim, Linda Witmeyer, Aidan Dalton and Ara Furry; Augustus Gloop by Evan Miller; Mrs. Gloop by Amy Feaster; Veruca Salt by Phoebe Ruth; Mr. Salt by Cody Hermansen; Violet Beauregarde by Katie Burke; Mrs. Beauregarde by Madison Milheim; Mike Teavee by Syrus Osborne; and Ms Teavee by Bryanna Johnson.

The students who do not have speaking roles are Candy Man Kids and in the Oompa-Loompa Chorus and some of them also play the cooks and the squirrels.

Public performances of the musical will be at 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 12 and 13 in the auditorium at Blossburg.
