Gmeiner Art and Cultural Center to present 2 exhibits

WELLSBORO — The Gmeiner Art & Cultural Center, 134 Main St., will host two art exhibits through May 27, 2018. Chad McKay of Mansfield, will exhibit ceramic sculptures and vessels in the Center’s Atrium Gallery. Milton artist BJ Maker will display paintings in the Main Gallery.

Maker reluctantly began painting in the ’90s when her mother came to live with her and encouraged her to paint (being a China artist herself). For this exhibit, Maker was inspired by gardening and cooking, therefore, flowers, fruits and vegetables feature prominently in her work. In these paintings, the world is brilliant with color.

Maker has exhibited with the Susquehanna Art Society in Sunbury, of which she is a member, and in 2014 showed her art at Fero Winery in Lewisburg. She has also exhibited at the Public Library for Union County in Lewisburg. Self taught, Maker has been painting for about 25 years, stealing every moment available to apply paint to canvas. This is her first time exhibiting at the Gmeiner Art & Cultural Center.

Chad McKay’s work in the Atrium Gallery at the Gmeiner represent a comprehensive view of some of the technical challenges he tackled during his studies at Mansfield University. These bottles, plates, and sculptures are time consuming acts of precision. These vessels represent different glaze layering combinations McKay experimented with.

Admission to the galleries is free and the exhibits are family-friendly. Exhibit hours are 2-5 p.m. Wednesday through Friday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
