Laurel Concert Series to feature music for young and old

WELLSBORO — The Pennsylvania State Laurel Festival’s Laurel Concert Series will feature music that appeals to young and old alike. Three of the five concerts are free; a donation is requested for the two others.

The series begins at 7 p.m. Monday with the return of Callanish, a four-member Celtic band that will perform traditional music from Ireland and Scotland and contemporary Celtic songs. The concert will be held in the Coolidge Theatre at the Deane Center for the Performing Arts, 104 Main St. The women will play lively dance reels and jigs, love songs and spirited Irish drinking tunes. They are well-known for their three-part vocal harmonies and the instruments they play, including flutes, whistles, concertina, fiddle, viola, pipes, guitar, Irish bouzouki, banjo, spoons and the bodhran (Irish frame drum). A donation is recommended for this concert.

At 7 p.m. Tuesday, Drowsy Maggie will perform American roots music, including both instrumental and vocal arrangements in the Coolidge Theatre. Their music is a mix of traditional and new bluegrass, folk, folk rock, old-time, Irish, Scottish and country. The band includes Danny Shipe, lead vocalist on guitar and banjo; vocalist Molly Cary on guitar and percussion; Daria Lin-Guelig, hammered dulcimer and concertina; Carl Conn, fiddle, flute and whistles; and Bruce Smith, bass. The show will feature songs by artists such as Nanci Griffin, Eva Cassidy, Fleetwood Mac, Hot Rize, Doc Watson, Tony Rice, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, the Stanley Brothers, the Wailin’ Jennys and others. A donation is recommended for this concert.

The “Almost World Famous” Wellsboro Town Band will give an outdoor concert under the trees on The Green at 7 p.m. Wednesday. Attendees should bring chairs, a blanket and dinner to enjoy during the free concert. The rain location is the Wellsboro High School Auditorium on Nichols Street.

At 7 p.m. Thursday, the town’s own Wellsboro Men’s and Women’s choruses as they perform at the First Presbyterian Church of Wellsboro, 130 Main St. The men, directed by Christina Simonis, will sing songs from movies and shows: Cole Porter’s “Another Opening, Another Show;” “Unchained Melody” from “Ghost,” “Moon River” from “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” and “Tell My Father” from “The Civil War, An American Musical.” Accompanist is Pat Davis, known as “The Ivory Lady.” The women, directed by Diana Frazier, will sing “My Tribute,” “When Will I Be Loved,” “Love Will Keep Us Together,” “You’re My Best Friend,” “This Nearly Was Mine,” “A Wonderful Guy,” “I’m Gonna Wash That Man Right Out Of My Hair” and “Celebration.” Accompanist is Judy Smithgall. For the finale, the choruses will join in singing “Downtown,” and “You’ll Never Walk Alone” with “Climb Every Mountain.”

The Pennsylvania Laurel Queen’s Preview will open at 5 p.m. June 15 on the outdoor stage at the Deane Center with the dynamic, feel good, fire breathing electric blues and R&B concert by lead vocalist Gabe Stillman and the Billtown Giants. This trio’s sound is rooted in American blues with influences of soul, R&B, funk and New Orleans jazz. With Stillman on guitar, Joel Vincent on drums and Colin Beatty on bass, the trio will play new originals and cover tunes by Sonny Landreth, B.B. King, Magic Sam, Albert King and others. The rain location is the Wellsboro High School Auditorium on Nichols Street. Both the concert and the preview are free.
