Williamsport Music Club to hold ‘Christmas Music by Candlelight’

The Williamsport Music Club will hold its annual “Christmas Music by Candlelight” program at 4 p.m. Dec. 2. The program will be held in the sanctuary at Pine Street United Methodist Church.

Chaired by Sara Scott, the program will feature festive and reflective musical performances combined with the beautiful setting of peaceful candlelight. The program is free and open to the public for all to enjoy. An offering will be collected during the program to benefit the “Shepherd of the Streets,” an organization that assists with material and spiritual needs to those affected by homelessness, hunger, fear and other difficulties.

Attendees will be greeted by members Barby Smith and Charlie Getchell and enjoy a piano prelude performed by Brian Scott. Instrumental soloists include Wendy McCormick on Celtic harp and Dylan Becker on clarinet. Organist Carol Waltz will provide accompaniment for congregational hymns and an organ postlude of Diemer’s “Joy to the World.” Sara and Brian Scott will perform an arrangement of “Suogan” a traditional Welsh lullaby with a Christmas text setting by Sara Scott.

The program will also feature the Williamsport Music Club Ensemble directed by Sara Scott and accompanied by Kristin Ivers on piano. The choir will perform three pieces from John Purifoy’s “Longing for the Light,” a work that celebrates the season of Advent. Select seasonal poems will be read by Kristin Ivers, Janet Hurlbert and Leatha Kieser between each selection.

The ensemble will also premier “He Shall Provide,” a piece written by local composer, Harry Claude Baum. Harry is a resident of Danville, PA and a recent graduate of Lycoming College. He is a member of the Williamsport Chamber Choir, Repasz Band, Lycoming College ensembles, Northern Appalachian Wind Symphony, and the church choirs of St. Boniface Catholic Church and Christ Episcopal Church in Williamsport. In August of 2019, Harry Claude will be travelling to Sydney, Australia to perform with a select ensemble in the Sydney Opera House through the Honors Performance Series program. “He Shall Provide” was composed for the Music Club to premier at the 2018 Christmas Music by Candlelight program.
