BTE bringing magician, one-woman show to stage

BLOOMSBURG — Although the Alvina Krause Theater may have been a movie house at one time, it is now the home of the acclaimed professional ensemble presenting live theater attractions. Still, Bloomsburg Theatre Ensemble does occasionally offer a double feature.

BTE’s double bill is not two features presented back-to-back on a single night, but two non-traditional offerings presented on back-to-back weekends.

As a deviation from its usual theatre fare, BTE is presenting magician and mentalist John Graham, followed by Laurie McCants’ one-woman show “Industrious Angels” on successive weekends.

JOHN GRAHAM

(7:30 p.m. Jan. 25-26; 3 p.m. Jan 27)

BTE claims that this show is “the most fun that you can have while being fooled.”

Graham mixes his mind-blowing magic and hilarious comedy with a musical score that can both stimulate and inspire an audience.

Although the magician often focuses upon audience participation, Graham practices a different kind of magic — of the mind. He estimates that he performs between 200 and 250 shows each year.

Graham’s highly entertaining skills include mind-reading, predictions and telekinesis.

His show is sometimes described as “almost like being a conversation with the audience — but an uplifting one.” And BTE notes that John Graham may even impart a few life lessons along the way.

And Graham’s show, which is kid friendly, is also notable by its surprise ending, which is so original that it may stun the audience.

“INDUSTRIOUS ANGELS”

(7:30 p.m. Jan. 31, Feb. 1-2 ;

3 p.m. Feb. 3)

This show is one of a kind!

Created by Laurie McCants, “Industrious Angels” is a “solo-handcrafted, story-spinning, shadow puppet memory play with music.”

The one-woman play evokes the secret creative lives of women, specifically mothers and daughters, and the ghost of Emily Dickinson.

Set in a shadowed attic, crammed with curio cabinets, work tables and chest of drawers, a daughter searches for a connection that ties together her family with that of the elusive poet.

Penned by McCants, co-founder of BTE in 1978, “Industrious Angles” is directed by Sabrina Hamilton, Artistic Director of the Ko Festival of Performance in Amherst, Mass.

There will be a post-show discussion and talkback following each performance in the Artspace Gallery across the street from the Alvina Krause Theatre, 226 Center St., Bloomsburg.

Both attractions are informally rated “GA” as suitable for all ages, especially middle school students and older.
