Community Theatre League heading to the library

The Community Theatre League’s “Page to Stage” program partners its Educational branch with the James V. Brown Library for a series of workshops and a special event beginning this month.

Two workshops will be held at the library hosted by Nana White of the J.V. Brown Library and Brianne Tupper of CTL.

Emotions-based Workshop

The first workshop, geared for children ages 3-5, utilizes a variety of creative expression techniques and quality literature.

The Community Academy of Stage and Theatre and the J.V. Brown library’s joint venture emphasizes that the workshop will share and explore books that “nurture a foundation of emotional vocabulary that will expand emotional literacy, and discover the many facets and dimensions of other shades of feelings.”

“The goal of the class will be for children to build a vocabulary of of their emotions, develop and nurture empathy and gain skills to better manage their everyday emotions through stories and creative drama,” Tupper says.

The J.V. Brown Library will provide a “safe, fun, and creative environment with classes to be held every other week beginning Monday, Jan. 21 at 10:30 a.m. No registration is required.

Read It! Write It! Act It!

The second workshop concentrates on elementary age students. Participants will learn how to turn a book or a chapter of a book into a script.

CTL’s Education Coordinator emphasizes that the focus will then be on acting out the script.

Parents of youngsters from the Emotions Based Workshop will be asked to join this series of classes.

The children will be the leaders and teach their parents the games and activities to do at home supporting emotional learning strategies and mindfulness together.

The workshop will conclude with students recording their scripts to be recorded via podcast.

This workshop will begin on January 23 and will run every fourth Wednesday through May of 2019.

Special Event

The Community Theatre League is coordinating its production of “To Kill A Mockingbird” with the two workshops to be held at the James V. Brown Library.

Marie Fox, who will direct CTL’s production of “To Kill A Mockingbird” notes that participants of the two workshops will be invited to read Harper Lee’s award-winning novel, attend the show during its May run, and then after viewing the popular film, starring Gregory Peck, join the talk-back and group discussion.
