Hamilton-Gibson readies for new season, announces three upcoming performances

Hamilton-Gibson Productions has its own unique way of constructing its season. Although most professional and community theater seasons run from late September or early October until June or July, Wellsboro’s H-G Productions’ season follows the calendar year. So, January means it’s time to ready the productions announced for the first half of the 2019 season.

Under the longtime leadership of Thomas Putnam, Hamilton-Gibson sets its sights on the first productions of 2019, which are:

“You Can’t Take It With You”

When: 7:30 p.m. Feb. 15-16, Feb. 22-23; 2:30 p.m. March 17

Where: The Warehouse Theatre

Moss Hart’s classic comedy is directed by Producing Artistic Director Thomas Putnam.

Set in the living room shared by the Vanderhofs and Sycamores, with a container of snakes, a xylophone, and a printing press, everyone usually takes Grandpa Martin Vanderhof’s words of wisdom to heart. But chaos reigns when young Alice falls for a wealthy banker’s son, Tony, and his stuffy parents show up for dinner on the wrong night.

Needless to say, everything that can go wrong does exactly that.

Thrown into the looney storyline is a talentless ballerina, a tipsy actress, inflammatory pamphlets, a Grand Duchess in exile and other assorted lovable, but oddball, characters.

When the fireworks in the cellar explode, the police and the G-Men raid the house, and after a mass arrest and despite frayed feelings, Grandpa’s admonition that “You Can’t Take It With You” makes for a happy ending.

“Miss Holmes”

When: 7:30 p.m. Mach 15-16, Match 22-23; 2:30 p.m. March 17

Where: The Coolidge Theatre

Before gender-switching was commonplace on the stage and television, an off-beat murder mystery titled “Miss Holmes” was penned.

Miss Sherlock Homes and her assistant Dr. Dorothy Watson try to unravel the deaths surrounding the deaths of a corrupt police inspector.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Holmes and Watson discover more secrets that they anticipate in H-G’s second production of 2019 to be directed by Gabe Hakvaag.

“Boeing Boeing”

When: 7:30 p.m. April 26-27, May 3-4; 2:30 p.m. April 28

Where: The Warehouse Theatre

Clare Marie and Linda Young will co-direct this French farce about a swinging bachelor living the good life in Paris.

Easily juggling his love life as his three finances are airline stewardesses who land at different times, major problems arise when the stewardess’ schedules change, and they show up at his apartment at the same time.

Complicating his life even more is an old friend who drops in, and a live-in housekeeper, who knows far more than she should.
