New business spotlight on Swirly
Ann Derr wanted to start her own business and bring a healthy product to the public. With the opening of Swirly, a frozen yogurt shop at 500 Pine St., she is making it a reality.
Customers can create their own dessert delights at her shop, a unique offering for this area.
“The entire store is self-serve,” she said. “The customers really like that.”
It’s a concept that appeals to all income levels and ages. Customers can make use of any one of six self-serve yogurt machines and concoct a creation of multi-flavors, if they so choose. For the non-yogurt patrons, there is also a soft serve ice cream machine.
An assortment of sprinkles, candy and other toppings are made available. The shop also serves cold beverages and coffee. Derr said she offers a high quality product to customers.
And with yogurt, she is able to serve that seemingly ever-growing market of healthy alternative desserts. With its sparkling bright colors and various amenities, the shop provides a customer-friendly atmosphere. Derr equipped the shop with two big screen televisions and wifi. There is seating for two dozen people inside the shop.
However, Derr plans to offer some additional seating outside during the warmer months of the year. She said she is happy with the look of the shop, which she designed herself. Making the customer experience a happy one is part of her overall goal.
“We greet everyone who comes in,” she said. “It’s a fun and delicious experience.”
Derr said she had some reservations about opening a yogurt shop in the cold month of December.
“But it gives people a chance to get acquainted with us,” she added.
So far, her business has been well received by the public.
The shop employs six people. Hours are 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday to Thursday and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Swirly is on the web at www.giveitaswirly.com.
