Cluster of radio stations sold to local group

A number of radio stations in the area are coming under new ownership.

Backyard Broadcasting and South Williamsport SabreCom have reached a deal to sell seven stations.

The buyer is Backyard Broadcasting PA, a Pennsylvania-based company headed up by Dan Farr, of Montoursville.

The stations are WILQ (FM) WLMY (FM), WWPA (AM), WBZD (FM), WZXR (FM), WCXR (FM), and W267BJ.

“I look forward to continuing the tradition of delivering great music, local information and community service with a team of dedicated on-air personalities and office staff along with giving our advertisers a marketing vehicle to promote and grow their business into the future,” Farr said.

Farr confirmed the purchase price for the stations is $5.5 million.

“It’s a very fair price,” he said.

Farr said no format changes are planned for the stations.

Current programming, he said, is serving the community well. Farr said he loves the market in which the radio stations are located.

This marks Backyard Broadcasting PA’s first acquisition.

The sales deal must still be approved by the Federal Communications Commission, Farr said.

Barry Drake, owner of the Florida-based Backyard Broadcasting, noted these are the final Backyard stations to be sold.

“Dan Farr was instrumental in putting this group of radio stations together and has been operating them for nearly 20 years,” he said. “It is ideal that Dan be the one to lead them forward. This transfer is terrific for our people and healthy for the marketplace.”
